A north-country manwas chosen, the veteran Thomas Hanby,who had served Methodism throughstorm and sunshine in Yorkshire, inKent, in Scotland, and throughout thekingdom. At his death, which occurreda year after he quitted the presidency,he was the oldest preacher in the con-nexion. The work effected by this Conferencewas of a disciplinary character. It re-enacted the rule against ecclesiasticaltitles, and the wearing of gowns, bandsor other clerical dress. Preaching inchurch hours, except in very specialcases, was to be discountenanced; andthe privilege of administering the sacra-ments was to be confined to ninety or moreplaces, definitely mentioned. Moderatemen hoped that the conciliatory natureof the measures it passed would allay theexisting ferment; but in this expectation they were disappointed.
