Nearly half a million share own-ers reside in the central area statesof Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wis-consin and Illinois, and togetherthey own more than 74 millionshares, or something more than 13percent of the common stock out-standing. Illinois, with nearly a quarter ofa million share owners, ranksfourth—after New York, New Jerseyand California—in the list of states. with the highest population ofAT&T share owners. While California ranks highamong states with a large ownerpopulation, other western states donot. Less than three percent of theshare owners live in the Northwest,a little more than six percent callthe Southwest home, and the Moun-tain group, which includes Mon-tana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Ida-ho, Utah and Colorado, claims few-er than three percent of the owners. While more than 99 percent ofthe owners live in the continentalUnited States, some 3,500 of themlive in Hawaii, 750 in Alaska, andnearly 1,000 in Puerto Rico, theCanal Zone and other posses-sions. Less than one percent of theowners live in foreign countries, buttheir holdings of more than eightmillion shares are significant. Asyou might expect, our northernneighbor, Canada, leads the list offoreign countries having large num-bers of AT&T share owners. Ofcountries having 300 and moreowners, ranked in order after Can-ada come Germany, England, Italy
