Protected Cruiser No. 6, which the Union Iron Worksare now building in San Francisco, is a twin-screw pro-tected cruiser, of the following dimensions : Length onload water Ime, 340 It.; extreme breadth, 53 it.; meandraft, 21 ft. 6 in. ; displacement at normal draft, 5,500 tons. This ship has a protective deck 4J in. thick on the slopesand 2 in. on the flat over the machinery space ; 3 in. onthe slopes and 2 in. on the fiat forward and abaft of it.
