On to the post just back of the grind- stone has been screwed a strip of 3-8 by 1 inch iron, into which has been drilled a series of holes, part way through, one under the other, about 3-4 inch apart, and numbered. When the plane-iron has been clamped to the block so that the cutting edge is not more than 1 inch ahead of it, the pivot is set in any hole and the iron dropped on the stone. A few seconds of grinding will show the new bevel and if this should not be what is wanted, set the pivot in another hole and try again. Not more than one or two changes will usually be required. When the proper hole has been found, note its number. With this device the stone may be turned by one hand and the tool NEW PLANER AND MATCHER.
