At the southeast are seen the ship houses and tall chimneys of the Navy Yard, and more towards the south on the neck of land at the junction of the Anacostia or East branch with the Potomac, are the Arsenal and the Penitentiary. The Potomac river lies along the south of the city, and adds greatly to the beauty of the view. Alexandria, a city of 10,000 inhabitants, can be seen about six miles to the south.
