Salmonella bacterium

They are Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile bacteria that inhabit the gut. The Salmonella genus includes & S. paratyphi, responsible for typhoid & paratyphoid fevers in humans. Other serotypes are responsible for gastroenteritis or food poisoning. Different types are classified according to their antigenic nature; around 1800 serotypes of Salmonella have been identified.
