Such is the original of the present water-frame andthrostle. It was afterwards greatly improved byArkwright himself; and, when horse-power was ex-changed for water-power, the number of spindles in theframe was multiplied. The original machine wasadapted only to perform the last operation in spinning,namely, reducing the rovings into yarn; but it waseasily applicable to the process of roving itself, as willsubsequently appear. It is remarkable that the inventor,in his application for a patent, described himself as Richard Arkwright, of Nottingham, cloclcmalcer.*He and his partners erected a mill at Nottingham,which was driven by horses; but this mode of turningthe machinery being found too expensive, they builtan
