Cleisthenes (6th Century BC), tyrant of the ancient Greek city of Sicyon founded Pythian games at Sicyon and built a new Sicyonian treasury at Delphi. The games were reestablished with new magnificence and Cleisthenes (picturesd) won the first chariot race in 582. Chariot racing was a prestigious competition, due to only the wealthy being able to afford the maintenance and transportation of horses. These races consisted of different events: the four-horse chariot race, the two-horse chariot race, and the horse with rider race, the rider being hand picked by the owner.
