Prom his 18th to his 21st year he was in the employ of JohnWells in the dry goods trade in Port Huron. In 1846 he went to Chicago and was in theemploy of Jacob Beidler in the lumber business. By the aid of his employer he became thesenior partner of Hannah, Lay & Io. In 1852 Perry Hannah was married to Miss Anna Flint, who died in 1898, leaving twodaughters and one son. Hattie, wife of J. F. Keeney, Julius T., who married Elsie Raff,and Claribel, wife of Geo. VV. Gardner. Mr. Hannahs subsequent career is shown in thehistory of the firm which appears in the pages of this work. Born in Batavia, Genesee Countv, New York, June 18,1825, he attended school there until he was sixteen years old, when he began work as clerkin a country store. In ISi^, he went to Chicago, and next year engaged in the lumberingbusiness at the corner of and Canal streets, and at this time formed the partnershipwith Perry Hannah, that continued until the latters death. In 1853, assisted by a civil engineer named Whelpley, Mr. Lay laid out the towni ofTraverse City, and thus became the virtual founder of this prosperous municipality.
