Flooding on the River Medway at Tonbridge, Kent, UK.

Mid to late January 2009 saw areas of low pressure moving eastwards across the UK which brought very unsettled conditions to the whole of England. Some of the rain was heavy, bringing localised flooding to some areas, such as here in Tonbridge, South East England. Between the bands of rain, there were some spells of sunshine, but also a scattering of showers. The River Medway is a river in South East England. It rises in the High Weald, Sussex and flows through Tonbridge, Maidstone and the Medway conurbation in Kent, before emptying into the Thames Estuary near Sheerness, a total distance of 70 miles (113 km). About 13 miles (21 km) of the river lies in Sussex, with the remainder being in Kent. It is seen here in Tonbridge, Kent, where it is overtopping after heavy rain and flooding the adjacent parkland.
