Orville Wright, American Aviation Pioneer
Orville Wright (1871-1948), American who, with his brother Wilbur, invented and launched the first successful airplane. The brothers' interest in aviation was sparked by Otto Lilienthal's glider flights in the 1890s. Their first aircraft was constructed in their bicycle factory and repair shop in Ohio. The movable wing that allowed for correcting the aircraft's position in flight is what distinguished their models from other early aircraft. On December 17, 1903, the Wrights made their first sustained (59 seconds), power-driven flight at Kitty Hawk, NC.
