A variety of lichens and mosses have made the sandstone rock home their colours blending in with the surrounding landscape. With the outcrop tapering away into the distance it gives a good example of the recession of plains. Sandstone is a coarse-grained, sedimentary rock which consists of consolidated sand that has been deposited by either water or wind. Sandstone is composed essentially of quartz and the material that binds the grains of sand together is usually composed of silica, calcium carbonate, or iron oxide. The colour of sandstone rock is by and large due to the cementing material, iron oxides causing red or reddish-brown sandstone, whilst other materials produce white, yellowish, or greyish colour sandstone.
