The "Sleeping Maiden", tombstone of Sofia Afentaki, classicist work by Giannoulis Chalepas, 1st cemetery of Athens, Greece
As morbid or macabre it may sound, the 1st cemetery of Athens is a great, open air "museum" of sculpture, one of the greatest "galleries" in the Greek capital. Here you can see the "Sleeping Maiden" (1878), tombstone of Sofia Afentaki, classicist work by Giannoulis Chalepas (1851-1938). Chalepas was one of the most important, modern Greek sculptors, but unfortunately, very young, he suffered from mental illness, schizophrenia. Giannoulis Chalepas was born in Pyrgos village, Tinos island, which is considered the "capital" of the marble sculpture.
