The restored bascule bridge in Liverpool's historic docklands

A bascule bridge is a bridge that tilts to allow the passage of large objects, usually ships, to pass through. This particular bridge allowed the passage of ships to "Stanley Dock" while carrying Regent Road. Stanley Dock links the Leeds/Liverpool canal to the Mersey and was therefore an important interchange.
