The kiln is not so much for com-paring the relative efficiency of different types as tomake possible studies by which these various typesmay be improved and the best drying rates workedout. It is intended also to use the kiln as a dem-onstrator in the courses of dry kiln operation. In designing the kiln, special attention was givento the production and control of the air circulation;two types, internal and external, of blower or forceddraught equipment, are provided, and further controlis possible with the series of air ducts, dampers, andvents. The four internal blowers are all mounted on oneshaft below the lumber and are driven by a motorlocated outside the kiln. Heating coils are on eitherside of the blowers. Reversing the motor reverses. Operating room of the new demonstration kiln at theForest Products Laboratory the action of the blowers so that the air max beeither forced inward through the lumber or drawnoutward. The course of the air is further directedand made more uniform with a special arrangementof baffles and air distributors. This reversal of cir-culation produces more uniform drying with lesspower and in less time than is possible with a non-reversing circulation. The internal fans are particu- (Continued on page 96) Canadian Woodworker and Furniture Manufacturer 75 Upholstering and Trimming Application of Down as aTop Stuffing Thin Quilted Pad of Down Over Springs andHair is Advantageous—May BeUsed on Any Chair of RoomyDimensions The chair frame, illustrated in fig. 125, introducesa new theory of comfort into the discussion of theapplication of down as a top stuffing.
