Transmission electron micrograph of a single whole epithelial cell. The epithelium is the tissue covering the body's external surface & lining most of its hollow structures. Here, the large structure in the centre is the nucleus, the round object at its lower left being the nucleolus; the large smooth objects surrounding the nucleus are lipid granules; the large elongated organelles are mitochondria (their convoluted inner membranes clearly visible); areas of convoluted networks of lines (such as that below & right of the nucleus) are either Golgi apparatus or endoplasmic retic- ulum. Mag: x20,000 at 10x8ins, x6,400 at 6x7 mm.
