Myeloma cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a malignant (cancerous) white blood cell. This cell has the typical morphology of a cancer cell. The nucleus (red) is greatly enlarged and multilobed and the cytoplasm (brown) contains many highly active mitochondria (blue). The nucleus contains chromatin (blue), a complex of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and proteins. Myeloma is a rare form of cancer in which plasma cells, which produce antibodies against microorganisms and foreign particles, proliferate uncontrollably. Magnification: x2400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
