The tube, oneof the water-cooled type, is seen fitting into the lead glass Fig. 6i. A Protection Shield. (Fig. 63.) This would be, I imagine, a very adaptable and satisfactoryapparatus. A tube stand should be heavy enough to be firm and not allow anyvibration of the tube while in use. The parts coming in contact with thetube must be made of an electric non-conducting material; otherwise thecurrent would pass from the tube into them, so puncturing the tube. The uses of the compression diaphragm are: To hold the patientimmovable; to compress the soft parts as when making a picture of thekidney, for example ; to aid the operator in directing the rays through apart at the proper angle and to cut out the secondary rays given off fromthe tube. A protection shield, often called a Friedlanders shield (Fig. 64),which is opaque to X-rays except for the window or opening in it, andwhich is used to cover X-ray tubes, also cuts out some, but not all. second-arv ravs given off from the glass of the tube. Thus if the Xravs from an 64 ELEMENTARY RADIOGRAPHY X-ray tube are d
