Mr. Jewett began to take an interest in pol-itics in 1876 when a youth of eighteen, andwas soon recognized as a Republican conducted the affairs of the Town Com-mittee from 1880 to 1890, and, becoming amember of the State Committee in 1884, waselected Secretary of that body in 1890. Hegave ample proof of his efificiency in thiscapacity during what is known as the famousTuttle campaign, the hardest-fought political. STEPHEN S. JEWETT. AsClerk of the House of Representatives, whohad the making up of the roll, he appearedbefore the full bench of the Supreme Court inthe famous attempt of the Democrats to makehim disclose his intentions as to whether ornot he intended to place on the roll the namesof certain Representatives who had been de-clared elected in town meeting. The greatbattle over, the If Kntitled will not soon beforgotten in this State, nor will Mr. Jewettsservices to the Republican party at that criti-cal juncture. As in all the crises of his life,he rose to the occasion, and suddenly thepeople of all parties recognized him as thecoming man. At the opening of the nextcampaign, that of 189
