They charged him with rashness, self-conceit, arrogance, and im-piety. Even his mother bitterly condemned him. She was a woman of strongmind, but was wedded to the idolatry and polytheism of her country, and wasalso under the influence of the superstitious and selfish priests. A short timehowever, before her deaih, or separation from him, she said : You are rightbut I am a weak woman, and am too old to give up these ancient observances,which are a comfort to me. This is the language and sentiment of natureand it accounts for the reluctance with which all persons (heathens or eveiChristians) give up their early faith and habits. JOHN GASPAR SPURZHEIM, 52?. JOHN GASPAR SPURZHEIM. JOHN GASPAR SPURZHEIM was born at the village of Longvick, near Treves,on the river Moselle, in Rhenish Prussia, December 31, 1776. His fathercultivated a farm of the abbey St. Maximin de Treves, and was a man of con-siderable standing in society. The son acquired the rudiments of Latin andGreek in his native village, and obtained a thorough collegiate education at theuniversity of Treves, seven miles distant, which he entered in 1791, in thefifteenth year of his age. Being intended by his parents for the clerical profession, he entered upon the study of divinity and philosophy, of both of whichbranches he became a profound master.
