Before going into camp, and whileengaged in destroying means of com-munication southward by railroad andtelegraph. Colonel Ellsworth, accom-panied by a sirnll guard,caught sight of a Con-federate (lag flying from the Mars nailHouse. Determined to capture it, lie en-tered the house, mounted to the down and secured the flag, andon his way to the street was shot downhy J. W. Jackson, the proprietor ofthe hotel. Private Francis E. Brown-ell, one of his guards, immediatelyraised his rifle, shot Jackson throughthe head, and by the next movementthrust his bayonet through the bodybefore it bad fallen from the step.
