The AtlanticCoast has many large and safe harbors for our coasting trade aswell as for that with foreign countries. There are also severalfine harbors on the Gulf of Mexico and on the Pacific fresh-water lakes to the north are great inland seas uponwhich sail many fleets of merchant ships. 2. The Resources. — The resources of the United States areof vast extent and wide distribution. The chief coal mines arein the Appalachian region; iron is extensively mined near theshores of Lake Superior; but both these minerals are found in. abundance in various other parts of the country. The RockyMountain Highland is noted for rich mines of gold, silver,lead, and copper. The latter is mined extensively also in theLake Superior region. The greatest wealth of the UnitedStates is in the millions of acres of fertile land upon theAtlantic Coast, in the Mississippi Valley, and upon the PacificCoast. Both in resources and in climate, nearly the wholeof our country is suitable for the hai)itation of man. 3. The Climate. — The variations in climate are is tropical, with moist heat, while Texas and SouthCarolina are almost tropical, with dry heat; most of the Mis-sissippi Valley has hot summers and cold winters; the climate GEOGRAPHY OF OUR COUNTRY 9 of northern California, Oregon, and Washington is compara-tively mild throughont the year; and New England has short,warm summers and long, severe winters. 4.
