Electrical conduction in the heart, artwork. Each heartbeat is initiated by an electrical impulse from the sinoatrial (SA) node (green oval) in the right atrium (upper heart chamber). This impulse travels through the myocardium (muscle) of both atria to the atrioventricular (AV) node (purple oval). The impulse causes the myocardium to contract. At the AV node the impulse splits into two bundles, one that stimulates the left ventricle (lower chamber) and one that stimulates the right ventricle. At top is an electrocardiogram (ECG) trace, showing the P wave (green) as the atria contract and the QRS complex (purple) as the ventricles contract.
