ExoMars Schiaparelli parachute testing. Testing of the parachute for the Schiaparelli ExoMars entry, descent and landing demonstrator module (EDM) when it enters the Martian atmosphere in October 2016. It will be deployed 11 kilometres above the surface, slowing the lander from 1700 km/h to about 200 km/h. It will be jettisoned km from the surface. It is 12 metres across, made from nylon fabric and Kevlar lines. This model tested the deployment mechanism in the world's largest wind tunnel at the National Full-Scale Aerodynamic Complex (NFAC), Ames Research Center, California, USA.
