The ruins of Soli, or Pompeiopolis, Turkey, 1841. Soli was an ancient city and port in Cilicia, in present day Turkey, 11 km west of present day Mersina (near the village Viransehir). It was destroyed in the 1st century BC, and rebuilt by Pompey the Great; thereafter, it was called Pompeiopolis. From Syria, the Holy land and Asia Minor, volume II, by John Carne, published by Fisher, Son & Co. (London, 1841).
