Water-powered furnace bellows. 16th-century illustration of a water wheel powering bellows which are blowing air into furnaces. The water wheel is connected to the bellows through a series of crankshafts. This illustration is from 'Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine' (1588) by Italian engineer Agostino Ramelli (). This work contains nearly 200 designs for devices, many of them water-raising machines including water wheels, pumps, mills, fountains, and wells.
