Backus. She was borne on the pensionrolls as a widow of the War of 1812 until August, 1888,when she died in San Francisco, California, at the ad-vanced age f ninety-six years. CAPTAIN WILLIAM FRANKLIN POTTER, Captain William Franklin Potter (Third Pennsyl-vania Volunteer Cavalry)was burn in Philadelphia, Penn-sylvania, December 17, 1838, being the eldest son ofWilliam Almy Potter, formerly of Providence, RhodeIsland, and grandson of Captain William Potter, of theRhode Island State Troops in the Revolutionary War. Captain Potter entered the service in the War of theRebellion as second lieutenant in the Third PennsylvaniaCavalry, his commission being dated September 9, 1862(mustered November 9, 1862), joining his regiment atSt. Jamess College, Maryland, after the battle of Antic-tarn. In the pursuit of the Confederate army into Vir-ginia he was engaged with the advance of the Armyof the Potomac at Unionville, Piedmont, Ashbys Gap,Amissvillc, and various skirmishes. Captain Potter was present at the cavalry action at Kellys Ford, March 17, 1863. On May 1 he was mus-tered as first lieutena
