Officers and noncommissioned officers were sent to the front for tours ofobservation in the Australian trenches. Each of these tours covered four days,and the regiment soon learned that excitement was to be found whereverAussies were engaged. All of the officers had hazardous and thrilling expe-riences. One tour resulted in the regiments first casualty: Lieutenant CharlesTwiss of Shelbyville was severely wounded by a German grenade while accom-panying a patrol in No Mans Land.
