Chapel of St Charmaig, near the south end of the peninsula between Loch Sween and the Sound of Jura, houses a fine collection of Medieval grave-slabs. Examples of the Loch Sween School of carving, the slabs are decorated with caricature figures and animals, swords, small circular shields called targes, and an axe. A = High Cross of Keills, c. late C8th, Irish influence, blue slate high, stood in graveyard c. 100m NE of chapel, carved on front face only: nest-like boss (bird’s nest with 3 eggs Iona style) surrounded by lions at centre of cross, an angel (St Michael) treading a serpent on upper limb, seated saint (evangelist?) giving a benediction at top of shaft which is mainly decorated with linear patterns. B (front Left), Early christian cross-slab carved on each side, W side in photo = simple ring-headed cross, interlace cross design on reverse. (C) = Early Christian cross-slab with crosses on each side, limbs treated as simple panels of interlace design. D (front) = fragment of a cross-shaft C14th - 15th, inscription records it was made for a smith, Cristinus Son of Celestinus Macicui - hammer, tongs, anvil on rear amongst foliate ornament.
