Achatius Hilling (1591-1670), German naturalist. Hilling was born in Elbogen, then Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. He was a member of the court of Frederick V (Elector Palatine and briefly King of Bohemia). Hilling was forced to flee Bohemia when Frederick's forces lost the Battle of White Mountain (1620). Hilling settled in Nuremberg, Germany, and his son Gregorius Hilling (1614-1680) built up a large natural history collection. This artwork, by German artist Joachim von Sandrart (1606-1688), gives the elder Hilling's birth date (2 May 1591) and death date (21 October 1670).
