CO —I J3 o- i» W t« *- d I. V SANDWICH ISLANDS. 649 and the commercial centre. The islands areestimated to contain something more than6,000 square miles. The face of the countryis greatly diversified with hills and plains, secluded vallejs, deep ravines, lofty moun-tains, and craters of immense volcanoes. Inthe elevated interior of the Islands the cli-mate is cool. Rains are frequent in the in-terior and on the windward side, and vege-tation in many parts luxuriant; but the lowlands of the leeward side of the islands aremostly dry and barren. The native inhab-itants belong to the same race with those ofmost of the more easterly islands in the Pa-cific. Pcypulation.—The population was esti-mated by Capt. Cook at 400,000; an esti-mate, doubtless, greatly too large; though, from various causes, the people have beenrapidly wasting away since his visit. About1840, a census not fully to be relied upon, showed the population to be not far from108,000. Social, Moral, and Religious Condition ofthe People.—Before mission
