When the Rebellion broke out lie raised a company at Lewistown andtendered it to the Government. It became Company H, of the SeventeenthRegiment, and when that regiment was organized he was elected Colonel. Heat once prepared it for service, and was the first Douglas Democrat to take com-mand of a regiment of Illinois soldiers. During 1861 he served mainly in Ken-tucky arid Missouri; in 1862 in West Tennessee and Northern Mississippi, and in1863 in Arkansas and Mississippi. His record is a part of the record of hisregiment. After the surrender of Yicksburg and the re-opening of the Missis-sipi River, believing the war to be virtually at an end, he resigned and came 590.
