Armadillo. Woodcut illustration of an armadillo (family Dasipodidae). There are ten genera and twenty species of armadillo living today. They are native to the Americas and are found in a variety of habitats. Most species are insectivorous and all have a covering of armoured plates. This illustration was published in De simplicibus medicamentis ex occidentali India delatis, quorum in medicina usus est, by Nicholas de Monardes printed in Antwerp in 1574.
