In 1642 SirFerdinando Gorges, ambitious for thefame of his new province, made Aga-menticus (York) the capital, changed itsname to Ciorgeana, and gave it a citycharter, thus making it the first charteredcity in the United States. In 1647, SirFerdinando died in Fngland, at the ageof 74, without ever having seen the shoresof Maine, which he had done so much tocolonize.
