Bramber, West Sussex, England: Parish Church of St Nicholas, the oldest Norman church in Sussex. It was founded in 1073, soon after William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066, by William de Braose (c. 1049 - 1094). De Braose had accompanied the Conqueror from Normandy and also built Bramber Castle. The flint church was originally built for a college of secular canons, but by the mid-1200s was the parish church of Bramber. Its nave and chancel are Norman and it is one of three churches in all England with original 11th century Norman carvings on the chancel arch pillars. However, the tower dates from the 1700s. The village of Bramber is situated near the town of Steyning and overlooks the River Adur.
