These reinforcements camemuch more slowly than was expected, whichcircumstance partly determined Mountjoy tolimit his operations to moving about andmaking an appearance in the field, in orderto weaken and weary his opponent, by forc-ing him to keep his army together. In thecourse of these movements there was fre-quent skirmishing, and many were killed onon both sides. In one of these encounters,on the iird of August, Pierce Lacy, the leaderwho had distinguished himself in the recentwars of Desmond in the ranks
