Early in 1692, Cap=tain Campbell, with a small band of soldiers, was sent toGlencoe. They remained with the clansmen for some time,living on friendly terms with them and completely winningtheir confidence. Twelve days after his arrival, after anight of feasting, Campbell and his men fell upon the de-fenceless people and shot them down in cold blood. Mostof those who escaped perished in the mountains from coldand hunger. The struggle in Ireland.—In the meantime, early in1689, James, accompanied by a number of French officers,landed in Ireland, where he found strong support. Exceptin the north, the people of Ireland had scarcely been affectedby the new doctrines. In the neighbourhood of Dublin,there were a few English Protestants, but the south wasalmost wholly Roman Catholic. Tyrconnel, who had beenthe Lord Deputy of Ireland, had recruited a large army, andwith these he now took the field on behalf of James. Thefew Protestants in the south fled in terror, while those in thenorth either escaped to England or gathered at Londonderryand at Enniskillen.
