Grey clouds view calm high tide seawater with small ice floes on sand beach from west end Outer Promenade, Fairhaven, UK
The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach between Fairhaven and St Annes, on Lancashire's Fydle Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast sea ice blocks, several centimetres thick. Here we see high tide seawater with small, loosely packed ice floes on the beach west of the Outer Promenade around Fairhaven Lake. The saltmarsh, in the background of the view, has now thickened and expanded onto the beach near the camera.
