It was a native conjurer who,under the arcade of the hotel, showed us the famousmano^o tree trick. As additional attractions, or a. JUGGLERS AT LUCKNOW—THE MANGO TREE TRICK sort of side-show, he had a large cobra in a roundbox, which, when the lid was off, reared its headall alive and hissing, and ready for a performancewith a well-to-do mongoose, which was held inreadiness by a cord tied tightly round its neck,which is apparently the only way in which to securea mongoose. The man commenced his performance by placinga monkeys skull on the pavement, and sticking a 188 INDIA IMPRESSIONS little china doll up in front of it. Then he produceda very dry-looking mango seed about the size of asmall potato, and this he planted carefully in anordinary earthen flower-pot, covering the seed withsoil, and then watering it, muttering- some unknownwords over it. He then put it under a cloth raisedtentwise by a stick, to let it grow, as he said, whilehe went on with a number of small but very skilfulconjuring tricks with cards, coins, marbles, ringand handkerchief, etc., any of which he offered toteach.
