Striling castle is the second most important castle in Scotland. Located high on a prominent geological crag. The castle dates from the 12th century on a site of older defensice structures. The castle has been developed and expanded over centuries. It has been prominent in many important events in Scottish history, including being taken in a battle by William Wallace, capture by Edward I of England in 1304, and later capture by the Scottish King Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Mary Queen of Scots was crowned in the Royal Chapel at the castle in 1543. The Jacobites besieged the castle in 1746 after the Battle of Falkirk.
