TheTories or loyalists, comprised some of the most respected citizens, whowere wealthy and influential in town affairs; the majority, however, wereWhigs. The leading members of the latter party just previous to theRevolution favored what was called the American Political Society,which at tliat critical period had a marked influence over town affairs.
