Skylab space station in orbit. View of the Skylab space station in Earth orbit, photographed from the departing Skylab 2 Command/Service Module before its return to Earth. Skylab was the first space station launched and operated by NASA. It orbited the Earth from 1973 to 1979. The single solar panel is evident, as well as the parasol solar shield, rigged to replace the missing micrometeoroid shield. Both the second solar panel and the micrometeoroid shield were torn away accidentally during the original Skylab 1 lift-off and orbital insertion. Photographed 22 June 1973.
