. The Indian empire: history, topography, geology, climate, population, chief cities and provinces; tributary and protected states; military power and resources; religion, education, crime; land tenures; staple products; government, finance, and commerce . from its original importance, Agra, at the close of the fifteenth centuryof the Christian era, was little better than an inconsiderable village. At length itsnatural attractions brought it under the notice of the emperor Akber, who chose it forthe site of a royal residence, and gave it the name of Akbarabad. Under this name itflourished as the seat of the Mogul government until 1674, when the emperor ShahJehan removed the imperial court to Delhi; and from that period, Agra, or Akbarabad, has progressively again declined in importance. Agra was wrested from the sovereignty of the Moguls by the Mahratta chief MadajccSindia, in 1784, and continued in the possession of the victors until the year 1803, when, after a short but vigorous siege, the city was taken by the English forces under LordLake. It has since remained in the hands of the British government, and is the seat ofa civil establishment for the collection of revenue and the administration of justice. The 1 .r =3 1 IFS SI Pa 33 58.
