But it is,not always that the surgeon is to look even for sucha union, imperfect as it is ; in many cases the ends of the broken bone altogetherrefuse to unite, being gradually rounded^off, and, perhaps, slightly incrusted withcartilage, or, as not infrequently happens, especially in very aged and decrepitsubjects, becoming, in time, completely absorbed, the lower fragment disappear-ing as far down as the two trochanters, and the upper as high up as the brim ofthe acetabulum.
