The nucleus consists of 102 protons (blue) and 157 neutrons (red). Nobelium, named after Alfred Nobel and first synthesised in 1958, is an actinide and transuranic element in period 7, and the f-block of the periodic table. Actinides are soft radioactive metals. The nucleus of nobelium-259 (half-life: 58 minutes) stabilises by alpha decay or electron capture.
