SINTRA, Portugal — The Manueline Cloister at Pena Palace, originally constructed in 1511, features two floors with walls adorned in 16th-century Hispano-Moresque tiles. During the conversion of the monastery into a royal palace, the arches of the cloister were closed off with windows, which were later removed in the 1930s. The cloister galleries, once part of the monastery, now serve as corridors in the palace.

Photograph by David Coleman. The Manueline Cloister at Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, is a remarkable example of 16th-century Portuguese architecture. Built in 1511, the cloister originally served the Hieronymite monks who inhabited the site before it was converted into a royal palace by King Ferdinand II in the 19th century. The cloister features two floors, with walls covered in intricate Hispano-Moresque tiles from the 16th century, reflecting the blend of Gothic and Moorish influences typical of the Manueline style. During the palace's conversion, the cloister's open arches were enclosed with windows, turning the galleries into corridors that integrated into the palace's overall design. These windows were removed during a restoration in the 1930s, returning the cloister closer to its original appearance. The Manueline Cloister is a key feature of Pena Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcasing the rich history and architectural evolution of one of Portugal's most iconic landmarks. Visitors to the palace can explore the cloister as part of their journey through this historic and visually stunning royal residence.
