Many of the towers have a saddle-back roof: atS. Andre de Fontenay and at Herouville it is of woodwith stone gables; at Louvigny it is of stone. AtAuthie is a very pretty one in the centre of the church,between nave and chancel (Plate XL), which are in anearlier style. In England there is a saddle-back tower atTinwell in Rutland, and another at Maidford in North-amptonshire, but the form is rare with us1. Pyramidalstone spires also occur. Those at S.
