A Cheap Smoke House—A149 It is not necessary to do without a smokehouse on a farm. A small building thatwill answer the purpose may be had withvery little outlay. The plan (Ai4g) shows. a little wooden smoke house eight by tenfeet with sides eight feet high. It is bigenough to hold as many hams and should-ers as farmers families usually requirewith once filling, but it is an easy matterto fill the house the second time if you havethe meat. This little house requires no frame workat all. All you need is a four by four forsills and a two by four for plates and somemore two bv fours for rafters. You can even dispense with the rafters, thetwo end pairs, if you want to make a boardroof. It is better however to make a goodshingle roof, then you have somethingthat will last as long as you want it. Forboarding you just take sixteen foot boardsand cut them in two in the middle. Forthe front and back use twelve foot lumberand the waste pieces work in for roofboards if shingles are used. A smoke house like this is not tightenough to keep the meat in after being T-O L /=>L/fA/ orFLOOff smoked. It is better to wrap it in paper, then roll it up in thin cotton and sew itu
