In Janu-ary, 1847, prior to the meeting of thelegislature, he published an essay onWhat Shall be Done with the Practiceof the Courts? and followed it by request-ing the appointment of a commission toprovide for the abolition of existing plead-ings and forms of action at common law,and for a uniform course of procedure. Inthe following April such a commissionwas appointed, and later Mr. Field becamea member of it. In February, 1848, thefirst instalment of the Code of Civil Pro-cedure was presented to the legislatureand soon adopted. Other reports weremade until Jan. 1, 1850, when the lastcodification of civil and criminal laws wassubmitted. In 1857 the legislature passedan act making Mr. Field chairman of thecommission to codify all the laws of theState not yet so treated. In 1865 this workwas finished, but only the pena
