In Janu-ary, 1847, prior to the meeting of thelegislature, he published an essay onWhat Shall be Done with the Practiceof the Courts? and followed it by request-ing the appointment of a commission toprovide for the abolition of existing plead-ings and forms of action at common law,and for a uniform course of procedure. Inthe following April such a commissionwas appointed, and later Mr. Field becamea member of it. In February, 1848, thefirst instalment of the Code of Civil Pro-cedure was presented to the legislatureand soon adopted. Other reports weremade until Jan. 1, 1850, when the lastcodification of civil and criminal laws wassubmitted.
