In the year 1867 the Sherman family was established in Milwaukee by WilliamMcCleary and Hannah (Lewis) Sherman, the former devoting his attention to merchan-dising until his death, which occurred in 1891, while his wife lived until 1907. Dr. Lewis Sherman was the only one of their family of four chiklren to reach theyears of maturity. He obtained his early education in the public schools of Vermontand afterward continued his studies in the Academy of Washington county, New next matriculated in Union College of New York and won the degrees of Bachelorof Science and Master of Arts. He then ent(^red Union Theological Seminary and laterbecame a medical student in the University of the City of New York, there winning hisprofessional degree.
